Freedom is a powerful ideal. We want to be free to do what makes us and those we care for secure and happy. There is an ongoing struggle with all sides claiming to support freedom. We make choices about where we stand and how far we go in the name of freedom.
Pragmatic freedom lovers are willing to act in ethically questionable ways. They justify their behavior as a necessary part of the fight for freedom. Even 'commandments' as clear as "Thou shall not kill" and the precept to refrain from harming become fuzzy.
